The Way We’re Working Isn’t Working is a book about the power of full engagement and what Tony calls the four forgotten needs that energize great performance. He backs up his thoughts with research and practical advice based on fundamentals to business and psychology. He literally starts the book off by defining the modern workplace in three words: more, bigger, faster. Maybe too much more in my opinion but frankly running a busy business is hard and confusing- more so if you don’t have the write people to bounce your ideas and needs off of.
“I’ve read dozens of books about leadership and management. What makes this book unique and essential is the integrated and comprehensive way it addresses the challenge of getting the best from people. The Way We’re Working Isn’t Working lays out a compelling new workplace paradigm and a detailed road map for organizations, leaders and individuals seeking to gain true competitive advantage.” –Tony Hsieh, CEO, Zappos.com
While this book is filled full of golden nuggets it is written for intellectual upper echelon much like many of my old college texts. Very little store but lots of ideas. If you a basic survival guide to renew your life energy this book may be for you, just be patient with the first few chapters and be sure to hold a note pad near by. The final chapter has a section on “Big Ideas” and will help you understand managing energy to maximize performance.
This book was released May 18th and I was lucky enough to get one of Tony’s pre-release copies. Thanks a bunch for sending me a copy of your book Tony. From Tony Schwartz:
Four Things Anyone Can Do To Work Better Right Now
- Take a true break every 90 minutes to renew and recharge
- Eat small portions of energy rick foods-proteins and complex carbohydrates-every three hours in order to stabilize your blood sugar and your energy levels.
- When you sense you’re getting frustrated, annoyed, or anxious, apply “The Golden Rule of Triggers”: whatever you feel compelled to do, don’t. Instead, take a deep breath.
- Do the most important thing first every morning, when your energy is highest. Resist all distractions and interruptions for at least 60 to 90 minutes.
